The Ringing Isle (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Dove, Jonathan - Littlemore, Phillip

Handel called Britain 'the ringing isle' because when he moved to London, he heard bells ringing everywhere: great bells in church towers, and handbells in some of the first private houses he visited. The sound of people 'ringing the changes' is a peculiarly British sound of celebration, and it seems a good starting point for a piece celebrating British musical life. Within The Ringing Isle, Dove incorporates some traditional change-ringing patterns, from 'Grandsire Doubles', 'Oxford Treble Bob Minor' and his own version of 'Plain Bob Major'. Handel's phrase also conjures up an image of a magical island, and so this is how Dove envisaged how it must have been to approach Britain from an ocean voyage.

This composition tells the exciting story of Blackjack, the pirate ship. She emerges from the fog, sails billowing as she cruises the ocean. Suddenly a strange ship appears on the horizon and a battle ensues. Blackjack fires a salvo of canons and hijacks the ship. Loaded with plundered treasure, the crew merrily hoist the sails of the Blackjack and embark on their next adventure. Duration: 6.30

Severe funding cuts in 2015 had a huge impact on Austria's military bands. This piece is about the resurrection of these bands following a political decision in favour of the renowned military music organisation structure in Austria. 'The Rise of the Phoenix' is an impressive piece, full of bright, colourful melodies and an incredible positive ambience. There is a beautiful slow middle section with a touch of romance, leading to a spectacular maestoso finale in which you can hear a hint of a famous military signal (as also used in Von Supp's 'Light Cavalry Overture'). The premier performance of The Rite of Spring in 1913 is the stuff of legend. There was disagreement among the people who attended as to whether it was the music or the choreography that caused the near-riot in the audience. Since then The Rite has been performed regularly and is considered to be one of the most influential works of the 20th century, laying the basis for modern jazz, film music and even heavy metal. It's all here: the driving rhythms, haunting Russian folk melodies, brilliant scoring, crunching harmonies and the epic drama! The intention with this arrangement for band was to stay as true as possible to the original and choose the sections that would work well in this context. The River and the Rock (The Tale of a City) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Shaffer, David

The River and the Rock depicts the rich history of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, settled in 1735. Each short movement paints a musical picture of the city's history, opening with "Beginnings," depicting a frontier that was settled very slowly as hostilities between England and France encouraged Indian bounty hunters to attack isolated garrisons in the region. "Patriots" suggests the city's call to arms throughout history. "Prosperity" visits the industrial revolution and the city's rapid growth at the turn of the 20th century. Movement IV and V, "Decline" and "Revival," offer a musical insight into the city's decline throughout the 20th century and rebirth in the 21st century.
