The river takes its source from the Welsh mountains and curves gracefully through some of the favourite landscapes of Philip Sparke. It crosses the picturesque cities of Monmouth, Ross-on-Wye, Hereford and Hay-on-Wye. Tales of the River Wye tells of an afternoon on the banks of the river. Most of Johann Strauss' 'Master' Waltzes were written during the 1860's, including the "Blue Danube", "Morning Papers" and "Wine, Woman and Song", and this one is no exception. Like his father, Strauss toured virtually the whole of Europe with his orchestra, being acclaimed as Austria's King of the Waltz, and visiting the USA in 1876 to celebrate the centenary of Independence. This arrangement by Brand, Geoffrey simplifies the original version slightly but retains all the colour and flair of a sparkling bygone era.

Talisman tells the story of the "Pierre du Serment", an event that took place in 1639 in the village of Fontenotte, on the border between France and Switzerland. Composed of three brothers and their parents, the Billod family lived peacefully on their farm despite the Thirty Years' War raging around them. When their father was captured by the Swedish mercenaries who plundered the farm, the three brothers vowed to save him, carving their pact in stone according to a Celtic and Viking tradition.Commissioned by the Orchestre d'Harmonie de Montlebon for its centenary, this work pays tribute to a local story that has become a legend. The conductor, Jean-Pierre Frigo, wanted this commission to mark the orchestra's presence within the region.Duration: 13.15

Tallis' Canon (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Tallis, Thomas - Sparke, Philip

The well-known 16th Century canon by Thomas Tallis is as effective as it is simple. This arrangement includes four verses of the melody: the first in the form of canon; the second for brass; the third for woodwind and the fourth for the entire orchestra.
