Depicting the beautiful landscapes of the San Andreas terrain in Palm Springs, CA, this programmatic work from Rossano Galante begins with a sparkling introduction mirroring the sun exploding out of the mountainous vistas. The soaring and robust main theme is first stated in the horns and then passed on to the trumpets. A calmer lyric section features a soloistic dialogue in the woodwinds. In the 1980s and 1990s there was a new surge of interest in the old swing of the 30s and 40s. The epicentre of this swing revival lay in the American state of California, Los Angeles and San Francisco in particular. Based on the rules of the old swing in which each beat has a ternary subdivision but with more contemporary sounds and harmonies, Peter Kleine Schaars composed this work San Francisco Swing. Through the frequent use of the rhythmic cells 22 and 24 in all parts of this composition, each band, irrespective of its experience with swing music, will be able to give a swinging performance!Duration: 3.00

Sancho and the Windmills (Symphony No. 3, 'Don Quixote,' Mvt. 3)

The third of four movements in Robert W. Smith's epic work Don Quixote, the listener is treated to the comic relief that permeates the entire literary story line. Beginning with the opening bassoon solo characterizing Sancho Panza on his donkey, the composer uses unique percussion effects to convey the hapless hero and his never-ending battle to stay up on his horse Rocinante. The listener can hear the rusty suit of armor as Don Quixote continually falls from his horse in one adventure after another. Perhaps the most memorable imagery in the entire literary epic is Don Quixote's battle with the windmills. Using harmonic effects combined with unique percussion scoring, the composer has brought this tale to life through the unfocused eyes of the knight. Funny, yet with a sense of sadness, Sancho and the Windmills will be a favorite moment in the performance of Symphony No. 3 "Don Quixote".

Simple, elegant and beautiful, this setting of the traditional African-American hymn is a welcome addition to the beginning band repertoire. Lyrical, flowing lines provide a welcome opportunity to teach phrasing. Full band statements combined with both woodwind and brass choir features create a unique teaching opportunity for the very beginning band. Although the original melody and this arrangement use only six notes in their construction, this setting is suitable for performance by bands at multiple levels. Highly recommended!
