Queenwood Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - McGinty, Anne

Ingeniously built on a single melodic fragment first stated by the trumpets, the opening section of this very easy overture alternates between a bold full band statement and a more lyrical melody in the woodwinds. A contrasting slow section features a flowing melody in the woodwinds with trumpet answering statements before returning to the fast tempo. First published in 1984, this is a proven winner for beginning bands.

The original setting of this beautiful melody was for Strings and Chorus. This Concert/Wind Band version features the brass ensemble, the woodwind choir, as well as the full band. It is intended for combined Band and Chorus, but may be performed by Band alone. It is completely compatible with the published choral edition, except that it is written one-half step lower (E-flat instead of E major). There are no accidentals, and, apart from the instructions for andante and legato, the phrasing is left to the conductor. The simplicity and rich harmonic structure make this an important addition to the repertoire of young bands, and a perfect piece for any band to program for the Christmas season.

Quem Pastores Laudavere first appeared in a manuscript dated 1410 which was found at Hohenfurth Abbey in Germany. Magnificat anima mea (My soul doth magnify The Lord) is the first of seven movements comprising John Rutter's setting of the biblical canticle Magnifica, completed in 1990. Rutter was inspired by jubilant celebrations of Mary in Hispanic cultures and conceived the work as a bright Latin-flavoured fiesta. In countries such as Spain, Mexico and Puerto Rico, feast days of the Virgin are joyous opportunities to take to the streets and celebrate with singing, dancing and processions. This arrangement for combined Concert Band and Chorus may also be performed by band alone, and is a faithful representation of the original composition.
