ALLIGATOR ALLEY (BandQuest) - Daugherty, Michael

Here is the first published work for young band from award-winning composer Michael Daugherty! Describing a stretch of Interstate 75 that crosses through Florida's Everglades National Park, Alligator Alley celebrates this noble beast that has remained largely unchanged from prehistoric times. The first theme ("Alligator's Theme") features the woodwinds (predominantly bassoons) while the second theme ("Hunter's Theme") is performed by the brass. Program notes and staging suggestions are included in this marvelously descriptive work. (4:30)

Alloway Tales (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Graham, Peter

Scotland's greatest storyteller, Robert Burns, was born in Alloway, near Ayr in 1759, and died in 1796. This arrangement of three of his best songs includes an optional part for speaker (Scots accent preferred!) The first song is a portrait of Duncan Gray, who rides into the village to woo Maggie. After some initial misgivings on Maggie's part, wedding bells are in the air, and both live happily ever after. The second portrait is of Mary Campbell, who lies asleep by the gently flowing Afton Water. This is one of the most beautiful of Burns' settings, and in this arrangement the flugel horn is featured. The final song, The Devil's awa wi th' Exciseman, sees the scourge of the village, the customs man, spirited away by the Devil in a flurry of dust and hooves. They leave behind some very happy villagers who waste no time in celebrating their good fortune with jigs, drums and fun galore.

Al-Manzah, nowadays called Almansa, is a town of Muslim origin. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-mansah, meaning "the watchtower". On a rocky peak above the town stands an impressive castle from where it is possible to admire the Spanish Levant (the Mediterranean coast of the Valencian region) from the Meseta (a high plateau in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula).This is a delightful and festive piece which is both pleasant to listen to and exciting to play. 09:05
