Nearest Thing by Far to Heaven (Flute Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

An expressive solo for flute and band, this slow, blue-tinged piece is the result of the opportunity given by the Covid lockdown of 2020 to look anew at some old songs. In this one, a fairly straightforward but expressive melodic line is stated in its original form then repeated in a much expanded and occasionally florid setting, allowing the soloist to cover a range from low C up to top A. Eventually the music returns to the tranquillity of the opening.The band accompaniment was written in 2024 and is kept light but colourful allowing the soloist to be expressive without fighting to project through the texture.Duration: 3.45

Neckarmarsch (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

The town of Schwenningen at the source of the Neckar inspired Wolfgang W?ssner to compose this march song. In the trio he employed Friedrich Silcher's well-known folk song Am Neckar. The march is composed in 6/8 time throughout, with the folk song theme likewise arranged in this meter. An optional performance with male choir is possible, with the first two verses, together with the last verse, sung. 02:40

Nedslatt, Sorgemarsj (Dead End, Funeral March) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Olsen Vadsten, Oystein

An addition to the composer's series of folk music inspired pieces, has the slightly condescending title "Dead End". The piece is a funeral march and so also written for an occasion, where this style of music was a natural inspiration. It is built on a drum ostinato, which is followed by a melody in Norwegian folk music style. The repetitions in the melody line and rhythm, create a hypnotic effect, leaving us in a special state of mind, alternating between deep sorrow, bottomless despair and grateful gratitude. The piece has proven to be effective, both as a concert opener and as the last piece in a concert. Duration: 6.10

Nemesis (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Fagan, Gary

The dictionary defines the word nemesis as: 1. goddess of divine retribution; 2. one that inflicts retribution or vengeance; 3. a formidable and usually victorious rival. This piece was written to convey the sense of the definition. Although the piece begins serenely, it soon ventures into a driving storm of contemporary rhythms and harmonies that continues until the end of the piece. A feeling of conflict between formidable musical forces permeates the piece; creating an exciting new work for young bands. Duration: 4.00
