Adventus - Scott Watson

Adventus, meaning "arrival" or "debut" and celebratory in nature, was written to showcase the playing achievements of students. After a bold fanfare statement, the main theme is developed (first playfully, then with more grandeur). A contrasting moment of calm transitions to the exciting return of the opening theme, followed by triumphant closing material. Written squarely for Grade 1 players but with an attractive, mature sound that belies its level, Adventus, by Scott Watson, would make the perfect concert opener or closer. Adversary - Larry Clark

Now, this is what composer Larry Clark does best! He gives developing bands daring compositions that they just absolutely love to play. In Adversary, an epic minor piece, he explores the villainous character that appears in most great stories. The added dimension of ?? time give this piece an intriguing rhythmic feel. It is full-sounding, but never taxing to the abilities of the developing band. A surefire winner!

Aegean Festival Overture - Andreas Makris

Aegean Festival Overture was originally scored for orchestra in 1967, and was premiered by the NSO under the direction of Howard Mitchell. The immediate success of the work caught the attention of Major Albert Bader of the United States Air Force Band, who undertook the transcription in collaboration with the composer. The work has been a staple in the band repertoire ever since, and like Shostakovich's Festive Overture, is best known in its version for concert band. Although Makris did not use any actual folk tunes, the melodies and rhythms throughout Aegean Festival Overture are unmistakably Greek in origin.
