Firefly - Simon Dobson

Firefly was composed by award-winning composer Simon Dobson (b.1981) to provide an entertaining up-tempo concert work for community and youth bands. Composed in funk-rock style, and is based on the groove beat with which it opens. Dobson says,"Firefly was written as a break from my more serious music and as a 'hat tip' to the various types of beat orientated music I listen to." The inspiration for this piece, commissioned by the United States Army Band, came from the Gulf and its constant presentation to the world as a media event on television. The composer wanted to capture the colour and events of war as they were played out on the television screen. Composed as a single movement rhapsody, the work is framed by the riveting sounds of airborne bombing raids with brass and percussion combining to create a gripping sense of tension.

Inspired by the fire towers that are a feature of many National Parks and forests throughout the United States and the lookouts who man them, this powerful piece begins with a majestic theme in C minor that will dominate its course. A contrasting Allegro idea featuring repeated notes, a striking percussion "break" and a subtle use of syncopated rhythms help propel this notable selection to an exciting conclusion.
