Elegy - Melvin L. Shelton

A touching and intense memoriam piece, the mechanics are on the easy side of Grade 4, but the demand for tone quality and control in tenuto passages and long slurred phrases calls for the best of musicianship from any group. The "Adagio e Rubato" tempo indication invites the kind of wonderfully expressive ensemble playing that should probably make up a larger part of band literature than it does today. Over a quiet unifying heartbeat from the timpani, the band explores the emotions felt after a tragic personal loss. A soaring F Horn solo (cued in Trumpet. and Alto Saxophone) leads poignantly toward a gentle Orchestra Bells and Wind Chime ending.

Elegy & Scherzo was written at the request of cellist Yuki Ito, to commemorate the 150th birthyear in 2023 of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943). Composer Johan de Meij used some hints and quotes from Rachmaninoff's 2nd Symphony (opus 27) and the Symphonic Dances (opus 45), to embrace the sound world of the Russian master. Elegy & Scherzo was premiered on October 27, 2023, in the Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana, Slovenia by the Band of the Slovenian Armed Forces, with Yuki Ito as the cello soloist. Soon after the premiere, the work was adapted for solo euphonium and wind orchestra. It received its premiere during the ITEC, the International Tuba- and Euphonium Conference 2025 in Valencia, Spain, with Shoichiro Hokazono as the soloist, and the composer conducting.

Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751) was a prolific Baroque-era composer whose works are now rarely performed. However, he was much admired by J. S. Bach who used examples of Albinoni's music in his teaching, and also used themes written by Albinoni as the basis for some of his own pieces.Elegy for Albinoni, a beautiful memorial piece in honor of this musical master, uses a romantic tone to set the stage for a theme based on one of Albinoni's violin sonatas.
