Festive Flourish - David Shaffer

Based upon a simple but lush harmonic chorale, the introduction quickly builds into a dramatic brass driven fanfare. The rhythmic "flourish" is introduced in the saxophones and moves between the choirs of instruments throughout the piece. Effective rhythmic writing compliments the flowing melodies building to a dramatic and exciting finale that is a signature of David Shaffer's festival music. This melodic hymn was commissioned by the town of Margraten in Limburg, The Netherlands for the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Margraten Municipality. Festive Music

This work of festive atmosphere was written in 2000 for symphonic band, then the composer arranged it for symphony orchestra. In this piece, Lszl Dubrovay (*1943) parts with his special, hallmark concert band effects; rather, lively vibrations enriched with colliding seconds and distant overtones are brought to the foreground. The special sound is coloured by ornamental trills, appearing even in batches, and vibrating collisions in the high registers. The performance is rendered even more unique by the outer trumpets on both sides of the space. The trumpets and the flugelhorns can be divided into ten parts altogether, thus, the piece can be played by one ensemble or several bands together, as it is usual at the conclusion of large-scale festivals. This composition may be a great choice for festive concerts, since it is a solemn, innovative, and - by virtue of the free arrangement of the performing space - special work at the same time.

Festive Overture - Dimitri Shostakovich

Festive Overture was composed in 1954 to commemorate the 37th birthday of the October Revolution of 1917. With this overture Shostakovich shows his brighter side, in contrast to his melancholy 10th symphony written in the previous year. The premiere of this piece took place on November 6, 1954 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Shostakovich makes great use of different themes which he alternates and intermingles in a masterly way. This skilful transcription by Tohru Takahashi retains all the grandeur of the original.
