This three-part suite is rich in dances and full of contrasting styles and dynamics. The title of the work is a pun on the term 'concerto grosso', a piece in parts for a group of solo instruments and orchestra. In Contrasto Grosso small groups in the band perform as soloists, interpreting contrasting renaissance style fragments.

Contrasts was written for, and dedicated to, trombone soloist Dr. Brett Baker. As the titles indicates, contrasting elements characterize this challenging piece. The slow movement Sounds has a somewhat dark and sombre atmosphere, with complex harmonies and special sound effects. However, the second movement, Caprice, is energetic, entertaining, virtuosic and somewhat whimsical - quite a contrast indeed with the first!

Convergence - Amy Webb

Convergence means "coming together," which is something your band will do very well as they learn to play this song. The composition opens in a chorale style, quickly moving to a faster tempo and returning to the chorale. The 1st trumpet's highest note is B-flat and no clarinets cross the break.

Here is an expansive work featuring a wide spectrum of emotional and sonic elements for symphonic band. From striking full band effects to delicate woodwind and percussion writing, this is a marvelous showcase for your entire ensemble. Featured is an amazing contrapuntal section for the clarinets, a flowing chorale, powerful fanfare-like passages, dynamic full band unisons and soaring melodies. Due to the length of the piece, the composer has provided programming options for performing shorter versions. (10:20)
