Castlebay - Gene Milford

This fresh new setting of two traditional Scottish folk songs, Will Ye No Come Back Again and Keel Row, was written in honor of its namesake, the Scottish village Castlebay. Composer Gene Milford has crafted a well-scored offering for contest/festival performance that is reminiscent of English-style band pieces. After the striking opening, the piece moves to the more fiddle-like Keel Row in a lilting 6/8. All of the sections of the ensemble get to shine and the band will sound formidable with this piece.

Castlebrooke Overture - Claude T. Smith

This overture is perfect for exposing less experienced players to mixed meter. Creatively scored, with thoughtful development, this piece can work well with small bands. An excellent teaching tool.

Castles of Llyr - Jared Spears

A distinctive work inspired by folklore surrounding Llyr, the Welsh God of the Sea. A powerful, grandiose opening sets the scene for the exciting yet mysterious allegro of quickly changing instrumental colors. A slow and dramatic section follows, building gradually to an explosive return to the allegro. Great student and audience appeal. Rated as a definite "pick'' for contest.

The perfect first-concert tune, Castlewood is melodic, energetic, and right in the wheelhouse of first-year players. Claves and tambourine are introduced, so there is a little something for the percussion section, too.

Castrum Alemorum - Jacob de Haan

The Castle of Allymes, "castrum Alemorum", located on a hill in the centre of the seigneury of Allymes (France) is an historic castle dating back to the fourteenth century, rebuilt in the sixteenth century and restored in the nineteenth. This piece evokes an image of the castle, its beautiful location within the surrounding landscape and its importance for the rural district of Ambrieu-en-Bugey. Combining beautiful melodies with rhythmical sections and modern sounds with passages in a renaissance style, this work of Jacob de Haan is an impressive musical challenge that is both fun to play as well as appealing for your audience: as you listen you can almost see the castlebefore your eyes.
