MusicWorks - Grade 2 One of the classics of young band literature, this composition by James Curnow is found on many state lists throughout the country. Described as a song of jubilation, Canticum opens with a very distinctive and rhythmic main fast theme. The beautifully melodic slow 3/4 theme alternates between various choirs of the ensemble then leads to a dynamic return of the main theme and powerful coda. A must for every band program! (3:35)

In ABA form, this is an excellent tool for teaching contrasting styles. The opening andante is not difficult and has 2nd and 3rd parts that are rhythmically independent and important. A percussion break leads to the majestic march featuring interesting lines for low reeds/brass.

Cantiphonia - Concerto For Euphonium - Bert Appermont

This spectacular three-part concerto (Contrasti, Romanza and Fugato) for euphonium and grand brass-band orchestra by Bert Appermont was composed upon request by the Swiss euphonium virtuoso Ueli Kipfer who created it in November 2004 with the Schweizer Armee Spiel conducted by Jan Cober. The composer was inspired more by its mood than the analysis of works by Mahler and Rachmaninov. This concerto, which is quite demanding for the soloist and a challenge for the orchestra, is probably one of the most innovative works by Bert Appermont to date. Cantique - Gabriel Fauré

This beautiful music based on Faur's choral work "Cantique de Jean Racine" is an exceptional arrangement. Flowing triplet-pattern ostinato throughout and various melodic lines allows for an excellent teaching experience for cross ensemble listening and balance. Stunning!
