Callisto - Joseph Compello

A winning and moderately easy concert piece that takes its name from one of the moons of Jupiter, Callisto is a vibrantly scored set of two variations on a fragment of a theme from the Jupiter movement of Gustav Holst's orchestral suite, The Planets. The characteristic flatted-7th of much English folk music is retained in both the quick opening section and the slow, reflective variation that forms the B section of this clever and appealing overture-style piece.

A dark and expansive opening leads to the powerful main theme as we explore the moon of a distant planet. An assortment of colorful percussion instruments helps evoke the mysterious second-largest moon of Jupiter. It's a powerful work that is easily within the grasp of young bands. This will be a great contrast piece on your concert. This provides a great cross-curricular tie-in with science, specifically the study of Galileo. (Grade 1/2)

Calypso Carnival - Timothy Loest

This fun, dance-like piece has a mildly syncopated motif with a percussion section including mallets, claves, maracas, agogo bells, bongos, and cowbell. The rhythmic motif is developed and all the winds get into the action before the final chorus. A perfect change of pace for your concert program. With CD.
