Displaying a wide variety of colors and textures, here is an exceptional work for young bands. After a grandiose and majestic-sounding opening, the main section of the work is fueled by the percussion and features mixed meters and careful use of dissonance. A chorale-like middle section features woodwind colors and rich harmonies, then a percussion section feature leads to the energetic reprise and final strains. Dur: 4:00

Bridge Between Nations - Jacob de Haan
This work builds a musical bridge between the nations of the European Union. In this composition each country is represented by a fragment of its national anthem. The listener will continually be surprised by the creative way the national anthems are presented. The national anthems of the nations that have become part of the EU in 2004 have already been included in this piece. Because the fragments follow each other and complement each other in a logical way, this work does not sound like a regular medley but rather like a varied concert work with interesting elements of folklore. For most of the national anthems Jacob de Haan has chosen a minor key, which gives this work an extraemotional, sometimes melancholic overtone.

Commissioned by the Oregon Symphonic Band in Portland, Bridge of the Gods is a dramatic three-movement symphonic poem presenting the colorful legend told by the Native American Klickitatst about the origins of the volcanic mountains of the Cascade range and legendary bridge. The first movement (Saghalie) pays tribute to the powerful chief of all gods and is based on a majestic fanfare theme. The second movement captures the beauty of the maiden Loowit, with haunting flute and English horn solos accompanied by soft chanting voices. The final movement, Tanmahawis, utilizes stark clusters, jagged melodic fragments, and rhythmic percussive energy as it depicts the destruction of the mighty bridge. Dur: 8:50 Recorded by the Oregon Symphonic Band - Michael Burch-Pesses, conductor
