Based on the traditional American shaped-note melody The Promised Land (first published in the 1800s), Beyond the Stars captures the spirit of the early American church musicians who voiced their enthusiasm for life and thefreedom of worship through both vocal and instrumental music. The music features several mini-variations wrapped up in four large variations (Fast, Fast, Slow, Fast-recapitulation). The composer has created new thematic materialfor each variation by excerpting motifs from three separate phrases of the original shaped-note melody. A stunning and powerful work for winds. Bi-Millennial Celebration - Jan Bosveld

'Bi-Millennial Celebration' has been composed to honour the 2000th anniversary of the founding of the city of Nijmegen. This work consists of three continuous movements. The first movement depicts the arrival of the Romans and the founding of Nijmegen. The second movement portrays the rustic and idyllic countryside surrounding the city. A musical celebration from these areas to the city of Nijmegen comes to life in the third movement. In this festive march one can easily distinguish the traditional Dutch anniversarysong 'Lang zal ze leven'.

Biberussa - Bert Appermont

'Biberussa', the old name of the small town of Beverst in Belgium, is a combination of the words 'biber' and 'ussa', meaning beaver and river. This concert march was composed for the 100th anniversary of the Koninklijke Harmonie (Royal Concert Band) 'Ons Verlangen' from Beverst, a place where the composer had his first musical training. After the opening passage, a proud, heroic theme is heard. As a contrast, it is followed by a simple chorale melody and both themes then appear simultaneously in a grand tutti passage. This is followed by a cantabile trio with a majestic reprise of the main theme bringing the work to a close.
