Weapon Dance

Ferenc Erkel (1810-1893) was a composer, pianist, conductor and teacher, a leading figure in 19th century Hungarian music, creator of Hungarian national opera. In his operas based on Hungarian history (Btori Mria: 1840, Hunyadi Lszl: 1844, Bnk bn: 1861, Dzsa Gyrgy: 1867, etc.), blending elements of the style of Bellini, Meyerbeer and Verdi with verbunkos he created a distinctively Hungarian opera genre. The 'Weapon Dance' is a popular ballet interlude in his opera Dzsa Gyrgy, and in Jzsef Pcsi's transcription youth wind orchestras can now add it to their repertoire.

Weather Report - Albert Dam

The weather inspired Albert Dam to compose Weather Report. The three parts Windy (rock), Misty (ballad) and Sunny (calypso) want to make us believe that the weather will be changeable. Stable or not, the music is solid as a rock. Het weer inspireerde Albert Dam tot het schrijven van Weather Report. De drie delen Windy (rock), Misty (ballad) en Sunny (calypso) willen ons doen geloven dat het weer afwisselend zal zijn. Stabiel of niet, de muziek staat als een huis! Weather Report - Shin'ya Takahashi

Weather Report was commissioned by Marunouchi Junior High School in Nagano in 2010 and premiered at the Nagano State Band Contest.One of my new thoughts for composition has been to ask students for titles, images and ideas. For this commission I collected many interesting concepts, and quite a few had to do with weather. So, I constructed the piece based on weather news and report. After the main weather news presentation, the meteorologist presents the daily weather forecast:"The morning will be clear and beautiful becoming cloudy at noon and eventually shower later. Rain intensity will increase turning into a thunderstorm. Towards the evening, rain and storm will leave, and there will be a beautiful sunset. That's the weather for today."(Shin'ya Takahashi)

A concert version of the dance music from the second act of the sensational opera for voices and wind ensemble by Daron Aric Hagen (see Overture above), this varied and colorful piece will be a brilliant addition to the program of a Grade for band. The music dramatically reflects the growing conflicts of the story (based on Othello) and climaxes with a powerful setting of the big tune associated with the idea of "crossing over" from Mexico to the U.S., and from Life to Death. This piece is a major addition to the serious band repertoire and has been added to the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List. Duration: 7'
