Variations on a Celtic Tune (Mo Ghile Mear) - Michael Oare

The poignant lament Mo Chile Mear (My Gallant Hero) was authored after the defeat of the Scots and their Celtic allies at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, ending dreams of independence from English rule. Michael's emotional setting opens with a flute solo then builds gradually as layers of instrumental groups are added. The piece shifts to a lilting 6/8 style, propelled by the percussion section, and culminates in a majestic statement by the entire ensemble.

Variations On A Chinese Folksong - Robert E. Foster

A Sichuan folk song provides the melodic content for this upbeat and cheerful setting in the Achievement Series for young bands. Variations on a Civil War Tune

This traditional tune, The Cumberland's Crew, was inspired by the historic gunship battle between the wooden Cumberland and the ironclad Virginia in 1862. The light and airy melody in 3/4 time develops a variety of textures and voicings and builds to a dramatic conclusion. This is an ideal choice to showcase the musicality of your developing band. Variations on a Fourth - Philip Sparke

Variations on a Fourth was written for an innovative project initiated by the Siena Wind Orchestra from Tokyo. Four European and four Japanese composers created a new wind orchestra piece for a special concert held on 15 June 2019 in Bunkyo Civic Concert Hall, where all eight works - that were recorded for a CD release the previous day - were performed. Variations on a Fourth comprises four variations, all of which feature the musical interval of a fourth in much of their melodic and harmonic material. The result is a four-movement work of wide-ranging appeal that will be an absolute joy to play!

Variations On A French Folksong - Franco Cesarini

The variation form is one of the oldest and most fundamental forms of musical technique. Franco Cesarini has chosen the well known French folk melody, Sur le pont d'Avignon as the basis for this piece. The piece begins with a short introduction followed by the exposition and ten lively and contrasting variations. The final reminder of the main theme also included references to the famous French nursery songs J'ai du bon tabac and Alouette, which bring the work to an expressive and brilliant close.
