Valerius Variations - Philip Sparke

Dutch composer, artist and poet Adriaen Valerius is mostly remembered today for his collection of 79 songs for voice and lute or cittern, published posthumously in 1626. Philip Sparke has taken one melody from this collection that tells of the War of Independence with Spain. The beautiful slow melody is followed by a series of lively variations to form an extremely entertaining piece that will bring great joy to all who perform and listen to it.

This work for advanced band was commissioned by the Tennessee Valley Winds to celebrate the group's 30th anniversary. The piece begins quietly with clarinet solo, then quickly moves to a celebratory section in 12/8 meter. The mainmelody is stated in many different voices as it steadily builds to a moment of controlled frenzy. A brief lyrical section features an expressive style and also a moment of glory for the entire woodwind choir. The work concludeswith a return to the vibrant and enthusiastic flavor of the opening. Valley of the Pinios - Kevin Houben

Lying on high, calcareous sandstone rocks are the monumental monasteries of Meteora, a region in northcentral Greece which look down over the valley of the Pinios River. This region inspired Kevin Houben to compose Valley of the Pinios. You can almost hear the wind swirl around the chalk rocks. The sacred atmosphere of the monasteries, the prayers, the solitude, the grandness of the valley and the splendour of nature are all reflected in this inspirational composition.
