Two Movements from William Byrd Suite - Gordon Jacob

Of all of Gordon Jacob's major contributions to the British wind band repertoire, the William Byrd Suite (written in 1923) stands as his most-often programmed work. Though originally based on six movements from William Byrd's Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, this setting for developing band incorporates two contrasting movements including "The Earle of Oxford's Marche" and "Wolsey's Wilde." Like Jacob's wind band work, the music is not a mere transcription from the original keyboard collection, but rather stylized with his own inventive musical spirit for modern concert band. A wealth of material here that opens doors to teachable moments as musical textures---dynamic contrasts, articulations, scoring options---are continually changing. Bravo! Two Norwegian Folk Tunes - Edvard Grieg

The melodies, harmonies, moods and rhythms of Norwegian folk songs and dance (even the sounds of Norwegian folk instruments) permeate the music of Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). After studying in Leipzig and Copenhagen he returned to Norway and a chance meeting with Norwegian nationalist Rikard Nordraak ignited his interest in folk music and laid the foundation for his compositional style. His most famous orchestral works are the Piano Concerto (1868) and the incidental music to Ibsen's play Peer Gynt (1875). He wrote many collections of folk music for piano and these two tunes come from his 25 Norwegian Folk Songs and Dances, op. 17.

Two Poems of Robert Frost - David Campo

Robert Frost (1874 - 1963) was one of the most popular, widely read and honored American poets of the 20th century; the two of his poems arguably most popular in the mainstream are "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening" and "The Road Not Taken." On the surface, these two poems appear quite different; "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening" is contemplative, set in the quietude of a winter night's snow, while "The Road Not Taken" is decisive, kinetic and brightly lit by a morning sun. These similarities and differences resonated deeply with the composer, and the opportunity to set recurring themes and melodies in such contrasting musical environments was the impetus and inspiration for this two movement work. Both movements conjure the remarkably different atmospheres of the respective poems but are interconnected thematically, giving the work cohesion and depth. Both are strikingly colorful and evocative. While the poems are not set literally, there are recurring allusions to the words present in the rhythm, particularly in the phrase "and miles to go before I sleep," as this line seems to especially reflect the physical and spiritual duality of both poems.

Paired together in this transcription are preludes from Ernani and Atilla, his fifth and ninth of 26 operatic works.
