This brilliant work applies the ancient practice of tropes to this powerful composition that sets a high standard in wind band literature. Repeated wind and percussion patterns and ostinati represent centuries of rituals and are stated in unmistakably bold fashion. In the central section, members of the ensemble create a haunting effect by whispering "Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison" as though they are voices echoing from centuries past.
