The Enchanted Melody was written for young instrumental soloists. It is carefully orchestrated with beauty and colour in mind. All of the parts are important and fun to play. The piece is designed to offer varied musical elements on which ensembles can work to attain higher skill levels without being overly technical or difficult. The solo part will offer some challenge without advanced demands regarding range, technique or endurance. The flowing melody lines and beautiful harmonies will be most pleasing and bring a smile.

The Enemy God and the Dance of the Spirits - Sergei Prokofiev

The Russian ballet director Sergei Diaghilev commissioned many composers to write music for the theatre. This was what caused Serge Prokofiev to compose the four part Scytische Suite (also known as Ala and Lolli) in 1916, from which The Enemy God and the Dance of the Spirits can be heard on this CD. This suite is one of Prokofiev's first works, and received negative criticism following its first performance on account of its being "uncivilised". Prokofiev himself wrote after this first performance ". . . The timpani player beat the skin of the timpani to tatters, and the whole orchestra voiced a protest. A cellist complained that he only put up with the violence, createdby the blaring brass, on account of his sick wife and three children . . .".

The piece The Essence of Music was written in honour of the founding of this young, dynamic and energetic wind band. The composition perfectly encapsulates the project and its achievements in music, and is therefore ideally suited as a concert opener.

The Essence of Youth - Stijn Roels

In The Essence of Youth the composer gives an insight into childhood and youth -- inspired by his own daughter. The opening of sparking rhythms, dynamic contrasts and changes of time signature paint a vivid picture of the unpredictability of children. The first and second movements recount the love -- and also tension and the worries -- in the adult-child bond, through dissonant harmonies but also pretty melodies. The fugue-like ending leads to a final splendid chorale: a picture of proud parents with their child!
