Opening with a woodwind ostinato, the horns introduce the melody thatbecomes the focus of the work. The pace continues through a beautiful lyrical section that soon explodes into a triumphant ending of brass under a flourishing woodwind ostinato. An ideal concert opener.

Highly programmatic and descriptive, this piece is based on three of Leonardo da Vinci's most well-known works. The first section, Vitruvian Man, is a striking musical representation of the human body and its proportions. Mona Lisa lyrically depicts the gentle and subtle beauty of this famous painting. Finally, The Flying Machine musically soars, reflecting Leonardo's fascination with flight.

The Band At The Opera

The Band at the Opera is a medley of four of the most popularly known opera excerpts: The Toreador Song from Bizet's Carmen, the conclusion of Vesti la giubba from Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, The Anvil Chorus from Verdi's Il Trovatore, and the finale of the Overture to Rossini's William Tell.

These songs are familiar, but the arrangement by Joseph Compello is unique and enjoyable.

The Bandwagon - Philip Sparke

Band director and radio presenter Yutaka Nishida hails from Tokyo and has long been a friend of composer Philip Sparke. As well as conducting bands and teaching, he also presents a weekly two-hour music program, focusing on both brass and concertbands, on the Japanese national radio station, Digital Radio Musicbird.The program is called The Bandwagon and the radio station commissioned Philip Sparke to write a march which could be used as a theme tune for the program. The result is thisbright and breezy march in simple ABA form.
