Atlas of Remote Islands - Harrie Janssen

This composition was written at the request of the symphonic wind band "Na Lang Streven" from Klaaswaal, to celebrate their 100th anniversary. As a starting point the English translation of the book Atlas of Remote Island was used. This is the story of fifty remote islands around the world where fantasy and reality go hand in hand. Composer Harrie Janssen selected four of the islands to create his four-part composition.

In Atlas Rising, composer Carl Strommen derives inspiration from the statue of Titan Atlas lifting the universe on his shoulders. Unlike Sisyphus (of perpetual rolling stone fame) the monumental effort of Atlas was successful. This piece takes this idea and models it into an exceptional piece for contest/festival performance.

Atlas Symphony - Thierry Deleruyelle

The Atlas Symphony for symphonic wind band is an impressive and subtle work, thematically complex, with a rich orchestration, but also great beauty. The composer was keen to draw a parallel between an atlas, where all the geographical maps of the world are collected in one book, and his score, which brings together all the facets of his musical style. Despite being written without any breaks, the symphony is structured around three main ideas. It is based upon a series of notes that will become the very essence of the piece, its building blocks. Like the works of composers of serial music, the series appears in different forms - melodic and harmonic, thematic or simply asan accompaniment. With its wealth of rhythms and contrapuntal power, this piece is a compelling concerto for orchestra. The Orchestre de la Police Nationale was the first to be attracted to this work and premiered it with excellence under the baton of composer Thierry Deleruyelle.

Atmospheres - John Golland

Atmospheres was composed for the Uster Musiktage and first performed in Uster (Switzerland) on october 1st 1989.The idea for the music comes from the thought that whilst a room remains the same, somehow the 'atmosphere' within that room changes according to the ambiance created by actions and emotions of the people in it. For example, an argument can cause an uncomfortable, uneasy atmosphere whereas laughter can cause a light, happy atmosphere in the same place. The place itself remains the same, but the atmosphere changes.So, in this piece there is an 'atmosphere' chord, which hardly changes throughout the piece, except that it is transposed at times. However, what goes on around that chord causes it to apparantly change according to the prevailing emotion. There are 3 sections which are quite seperate, but the music is played without a break. These 3 sections are really self explanatory: 1 - Mystery, 2 - Evil and 3 - Calm.
