Symphonic Overture - Charles Carter

Symphonic Overture is a contemporary-sounding overture of medium difficulty so scored that it can be performed with equal success by large and small groups alike. Employing the familiar three-part form (A-B-A), the opening section has a theme which is robust in character and with considerable rhythmic interest. The second theme, slow and expressive in character is a free form based on an opening idea introduced by the first flute. At the return of the first section, the first theme is treated as a fugue subject building to great heights as all four entrances are achieved. As the exposition concludes, the contrapuntal texture gives way to a homophonic quality which closes the piece.The coda, as is characteristic, utilizes material from the first theme.

Symphonic Prelude - Benjamin Yeo

Symphonic Prelude was written on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the St. Andrews school centre in Singapore. After a festive opening in the trumpet(s), a brisker passage based on the school song follows, which then leads to a lyrical middle section. At the close, the opening motif reappears and comes to the fore. The colourful, dynamic instrumentation makes this Symphonic Prelude an excellent appetizer to open your concert.

Symphonic Psalm - Claude T. Smith

Commissioned by the 1979 Texas AA Honor Band, this composition continues to be a favorite of school bands around the world. From the dramatic opening statement by the trumpet and trombone to the allegro development section, you will find all the qualities one looks for in an excellent contest/festival selection. The mixed meter trademark of this composer is a prevalent feature throughout. (7 minutes)

Symphonic Rock

Gilbert Tinner combined a number of hits by the well-known British rock group Queen - and a song by Genesis, also a rock formation from England - to form an exciting arrangement with the telling title Symphonic Rock. The instrumentation can indeed be called symphonic, but important instruments from pop music are also present. For instance, an important role is played by the electric guitar, and a synthesizer is used as well. The medley respectively features: Innuendo, A Kind of Magic, Another One Bites the Dust, Radio Gaga, That's All and We Are the Champions.
