Soar The Untamed Spirit - Roland Barrett

Commissioned by and dedicated to the Pratt (Kansas) High School Band, this piece honors band students worldwide, at every grade level. A new original work by the talented arranger for the University of Oklahoma bands, this piece begins with a brilliant fanfare. The work quickly becomes very rhythmic and energetic before leading to a beautiful, quiet, expressive interlude. The rhythmic energy returns and builds to a powerful and exciting ending. This is an excellent contest or festival selection for a good band.

Soaring - Sean O'Loughlin

Soaring is an exciting composition for solo trumpet and concert band. The music is celebratory in nature and features the dynamic and rhythmic range of the trumpet. The piece opens with an American rhythmic gesture reminiscent of Aaron Copland and John Williams. The trumpet answers this gesture with a bold cadenza that will transform into the main melody a little later on in the piece. If you have a good trumpet player, this would be a great choice to feature them or it can be used with a feature soloist from elsewhere. Just gorgeous.

Soaring Eagles was composed for the inaugural fifth and sixth grade band at Woodside Middle School in the Saydel Community School District in Des Moines Iowa. For an ensemble that needs the stability of mostly unison rhythms and simple subdivisions, this is perfect. It serves as an exciting concert opener, designed for students who need to solidify basic rhythms before encountering the complexities of eighth notes and dotted rhythms. Among the musical highlights are soli sections, dotted-half notes, dynamics and larger interval leaps for a decidedly mature and accomplished effect.
