Martenizza - Piet Swerts

'Martenizza' is the Bulgarian word for the month March. This work describes an old custom in Bulgaria introduced to the composer was through Ivo Stoykov, a Bulgarian acquaintance. In accordance with tradition good friends give each other a number of white and red pennants on the 1st of March. When a stork has been spotted for the first time in March, the pennants are hung in a tree, and one can make a wish. According to the custom, friends wish each other health and happiness for the coming year.

Martial Rabbit - Leonard

Morning in the forest. Peter Rabbit assembles his troops and they parade through the forest, to the accompaniment of the various birds. The barking of dogs is heard in the distance, gradually drawing closer. At the approach of the dogs, pandemonium reigns and the rabbits scurry to shelter -- but, as the dogs disappear, in the distance, the war-like spirit is received. Peter Rabbit again assembles his troops as they march, passing in review and away through the forest.

This swinging march by Jacob de Haan was commissioned by the foundation "Vrienden van de Groningse Politie-muziek" (Friends of the Police Music of Groningen), on occasion of the 950 year anniversary of the "Martini-city" Groningen. The trio in this piece features the anthem of the province of Groningen.
