Imagine it is the 12th century. You are of the nobility. You are going down the street to the castle for the festival. It will be a grand time. In the meantime, the poor are, as usual, left out. You pass them along the street. There is sadness, but then you are there, at the gates of the castle. You enter, the festivities begin, and you have a wonderful evening. Enjoy a bit of medieval festival humor. 1st trumpet's highest note is D. No clarinets cross the break.

Medieval Suite - Nr. 1 Homage to Leonin - Ron Nelson

Homage to Leonin evokes his sinuous melodic style and use of Gregorian chant. It is a mood piece in which a chant on the Dorian mode is gradually transformed into a perfectly symmetrical eight-tone scale. The movement follows theform of an arch with a large climax, after which it closes as it began. (5:00)

Homage to Perotin springs from his Viderunt - with its driving rhythmic intesnity, repetition, and pedal points. The opening section features dissonances in alternation with brass fanfare-like passages. A second theme played byunison brass is written in the Aeolian mode. (4:25)

Medieval Suite No 3 - Ron Nelson

Homage to Machaut evokes the stately, gently syncopated and flowing sounds of this master of choral writing. The movement consists of a statement with two repetitions, each with different instrumentation. It closes with the samechant and instrumental textures which opened the suite (in Homage to Leonin).
