Ogopogo - Grant Michel

Ogopogo is a mysterious, aquatic monster said to live in a lake in British Columbia. Though that in itself may inspire a student's imagination, the piece, like its title, is also a musical palindrome. Composer Grant Michel has written?both the main melody and the main counter-melody as musical palindromes and has hidden other palindromic ideas throughout the piece for students to find. This allows an already intriguing piece to become a wonderfully deep and engaging teaching tool for beginning students.

Ogopogo (Legendary Lake Creature) - Robert Buckley

Based on the legendary lake creature that lives in Okanagan Lake in Canada, Ogopogo uses quirky orchestration and rhythms to bring the monster to life. The enormous creature rises from the depths, plays in the waves and thensuddenly disappears back into the darkness. Ideal for a unique change of pace, Ogopogo uses the first 6 notes of the B-flat scale and is written in the Phrygian mode.

The melody known as "A Ya Zain" (also "Aya Zein" or "Ayazein,") is most often credited as an Egyptian folk song. The tune is easily recognizable as having Arabic origins by its use of the double harmonic minor scale (containing two augmented 2nd intervals). This arrangement gives us a good opportunity to expose young players to non-western tonalities. The use of short melodic sequences and repetition in the melody make it especially appropriate for young instrumentalists
