Pilgrim Traveler - Timothy Broege
Skillfully combining four distinctive melodies from the early-American "shape-note" hymnal The Sacred Harp, Timothy Broege has created a wonderful single-movement setting for band that includes many moods andstyles. "Pilgrim" and "Traveler" form the principal themes of the piece and undergo a series of variations. "Aylesbury" and "Jefferson" are used as transitional melodies and arecombined with the other two as the music becomes increasingly complex and contrapuntal. From tender and serene to bold and stark, this inventive work makes an impressive statement. Dur: 5:45 (Includes Full Performance CD)

Pilgrims of Wolfryt - Jacob de Haan
The work Pilgrims of Wolfryt tells the story of the legend Walfridus (also known as Wolfryt), a resident of the town of Bedum in the Netherlands who was born in the 11th century. Wilfridus had an eventful life: he introduced Christianity to Bedum and helped the town build its first legal system, but ultimately his story ended in demise murdered alongside his son at the hands of the Vikings. Pilgrims of Wolfryt is a symphonic poem-like masterpiece, full of evocative melodies in a mix of tonalities to make the most of the impressive rhythmic material.

Pilgrims' Swing - Graham Lloyd
The Andante from the first movement of Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony (often nicknamed Pilgrims' March) contains the most beautifully haunting melody supported by the simplest of bass lines and counterpoint figures. As a young musician, Graham Lloyd was so fascinated by this music he bought the orchestral score to study the notes, which at the time made little sense to him. However, he did notice that the bass line was similar to a "walking bass" line in a standard swing tune.In this composition Graham Lloyd uses Mendelssohn's original bass line, melodic line and counterpoint figures but gives them a swing feel. Who knows, maybe if Mendelssohn had been born a hundred yearslater, he could have become one of our big band leaders!
