Lanier Variants - Johnnie Vinson

During his brief lifetime, Sidney Lanier (1842-1881) was at one time or another a soldier, musician, teacher, lawyer, and a college professor. He is perhaps best remembered as a poet and for the middle school in Fairfax, Virginiawhich bears his name. Inspired by a favorite Lanier quote (Music is love in search of a word), Johnnie Vinson has fashioned a musical theme which captures the essence of this sentiment. With a bit of early American flavor, thismain theme progresses through a series of contrasting variations, culminating in a grand and heroic closing statement. Dur: 4:50

Lanigan's Ball - Ed Kiefer

Irish music is always interesting to composers and band musicians. It fits well with a concert band and is fun to play. Ed Kiefer starts with a solo clarinet on the jig Lanigan's Ball that builds and builds to a dramatic presentation of the folk song, before leading a section of repose based on the song Binnorie. The percussion is highlighted in a build-up to the climax where the tunes are combined for a dramatic conclusion.

Commissioned to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Lansing State Journal newspaper, this marvelous symphonic march was premiered by the Michigan State University Wind Symphony in November 2005, conducted by John Whitwell. In combining elements of our country's rich march history with his own blend of contemporary harmonies and masterful orchestrational techniques, John Moss has created an impressive work destined to become a staple in the repertoire of enduring concert marches.
