Out Of Darkness - Hilliard

A contemporary piece for mid-level bands which includes many compositional techniques not usually found in music at this grade level. The dark and ominous beginning section even allows students to choose their own "notes" in a couple of places and features some very unique percussion effects using trash cans. Since this music is quite different from the usual music most students have encountered, the results of performing "Out of Darkness" will raise musical horizons and awareness while challenging your group with an impressive concert or festival selection! Out of the Darkness, Into the Light is about optimism. All of us experience disappointments in our lives, such failed relationships or the loss of loved ones, but the indomitability of the human spirit allows us to overcome such set backs and get through the darker moments. For some, faith and religion may be the answer, but this piece is more about the internal strength that we can all call upon.Opening in sombre mood, the first phase of the work symbolises the doubts we all have about ourselves and our lives. The opening phrase on solo clarinet appears throughout the piece and could be seen as the central idea of the work, the human spirit itself. The faster, centralsection is about the struggle to overcome the pain we experience and at bar 88 the moment of catharsis occurs. This signals a change of mood and from then on, the clarinet motif is transformed into a feeling of joy and optimism. We have entered the light.

Out Of The Shadows - Michael Sweeney

Commissioned for the Wisconsin Lutheran High School's centennial year, this expansive work incorporates the Welsh folk song The Ash Grove in a lush and varied treatment. The main melody, played first by horns and baritone, returns near the end in a glorious, fully orchestrated chorale. In between is a beautiful secondary theme played by oboe and flute soloists followed by a dramatic fugal section. A musically rewarding and effective piece. (6:00)

An evocative depiction of the many moods of winter, Out of the Winter begins with a mysterious and stormy opening that gives way to a tuneful and vigorous "allegro." This energetic and colorful piece is enriched by some easy contrapuntal writing and contemporary harmonic touches. Out to Sea and The Shark Cage Fugue (from Jaws) - John Williams

Referring to the 1975 blockbuster Jaws, director Steven Spielberg states that John Williams' music was clearly responsible for half the success of the movie. This suite features two of the signature musical sequences. In Out toSea, the trio of shark hunters led by police chief Martin Brody (played by Roy Scheider) heads into open water to find the menacing beast. This is followed by the Shark Cage Fugue, a classically inspired and sophisticatedaccompaniment to a tense underwater scene in which Hooper (portrayed by Richard Dreyfuss) comes face-to-face with the great white in an all-too-fragile suspended cage.
