Afro Blue - Mongo Santamaria

Composed in 1959 by Mongo Santamaria, Afro Blue became one of the earliest jazz standards written in an Afro-Cuban style. This creative setting for concert band utilizes the African bemb rhythm, along with characteristic melodies and harmonies alternating between various sections of the band. Also a great vehicle for engaging your percussion section while introducing your students to an important and appealing musical genre. Dur: ca. 2:30

After Mozart

Lszl Dubrovay's work, written in 2006, on the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, is a salute of a 21st-century composer to one of the greatest geniuses in the history of music. The composer builds his original ideas on one of the best-known melodies of The Marriage of Figaro (Figaro's aria: ''Non pi? andrai, farfallone amoroso''). The series of variations on the theme of the aria is created by the involvement of special instruments, and by fully harnessing their technical abilities, while Dubrovay's hallmark of a perfect balance and peculiar compositional tone is realised on an exceptionally large orchestra. The work is suited to illustrate the potentials of crossovers between different periods in the history of music, but it can also be played at a festive, thematic concert.

We are proud to present this compelling work that won the NBA/Merrill Jones Composition Contest for Young Composers. The composer was still in high school when he wrote this sensitive work of substance for winds and percussion; it displays a keen sense of color and creativity as well as a high level of artistry. The clear and evocative writing is reflective of the composers talent and imagination.
