Freedom Overture - John Edmondson

Commissioned by a junior high band in Mesa, Arizona, the work is playable by bands with limited instrumentation and experience. A maestoso primo section is followed by a lyrical 3/4 movement featuring woodwinds. A return to the original theme is heard with an expanded tutti finale. An excellent choice for program or contest.

A dramatic composition paying tribute to the many immigrants who came to this country through Ellis Island., it delivers a uniquely conceived sound that is full of brilliance and drive! Embodying the essence of freedom, it includes a beautiful and tender section that features solos for flute and trumpet as well as for the entire horn section. Freedom Rising - David Shaffer

"Freedom Rising" was written in commemoration of the 150 anniversary of Quantrill's raid on the unsuspecting town of Lawrence, Kansas where the residents bravely fought to defend their town from the forces of pro-slavery western counties. Opening with a dark and haunting woodwind choir, the composition quickly journeys into the raging battle that took place that fateful August day in 1863. The slower middle section is a powerful hymn expressing the hope of all townspeople for a successful defense to this sneak-attack. The dramatic powerful conclusion leaves us with the knowledge that this community fought desperately for the freedom of all people. A powerful piece that brings to life this brief but important period in American history.

A modern but patriotic setting with optional narration makes FREEDOM'S PROMISE a moving and versatile Grade 3 piece you will want to add to your band library. It's an ideal patriotic feature for school or community performance. A musical tribute to The Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution, the optional narration can be read by one, or divided between a number of students. Freedom's Song - James Curnow

It has been difficult to find mature sounding arrangements of patriotic music for the Grade 1 band. The stately tempo and carefully controlled ranges and rhythms in this one makes James Curnow's skillful interpretation of TheBattle Hymn of the Republic accessible to young bands while sounding sophisticated enough for groups that normally play more difficult music. Freedom's Song belongs in every music library. (Grade 1)

Freedom's Voice was commissioned to commemorate "The Voice of America," which began broadcasting in 1942 to combat Nazi propaganda with truthful news and information. VOA has served the world with a consistent message of truth, hope and inspiration. Opening with a mysterious and haunting melody representing the axis powers during the 2nd world war, the piece quietly builds into a voice of hope with the introduction of fanfare figures woven into a stoic rhythmic melody. The piece builds forcefully utilizing just these 2 simple musical elements into a broad finale representing the glory of freedom and free speech. Inspiring for both performers and audiences. Exceptional!
