Hermitage - Jan de Haan

Jan de Haan drew inspiration for this work from five paintings exhibited in The Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, one of the largest and most versatile museums in the world. He used the melodious Andante cantabile from the String Quartet Op. 11 by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as its starting point. Thus, he created his own musical painting, which is just as varied as the underlying canvases - from Cheerful Company by Dirck Hals to Dance II by Henri Matisse. A true work of art!

The story of a hero on a quest is one that goes back through centuries of mythology, repeated in almost every culture. This descriptive music mirrors these legends, establishing a heroic theme that's subjected to several variations of trials and tribulations. Ultimately the piece returns to a full and transformed version of the hero theme for an uplifting and triumphant conclusion.

Heroes Near and Far - Richard L. Saucedo

Each of the five movements of this innovative work is designed to invoke a particular type of emotion associated with leadership. Courage is stately in nature and written in a marcato style. Vision is playful in character andfocuses on mixed meters as well as mixed emotions. The lyrical and sensitive Compassion is meant to stir the soul, while the contrasting Selflessness offers some of the most intense and demanding music of the set. The energeticfinal movement Heroes will bring to mind your own favorite superhero! Educator and speaker Scott Lang helped develop the concept for this unique work, and has made available supplemental curricula centered around leadership andcharacter development. This material is tied to the Common Core Standards relating to reading, writing, music, art, and critical thinking.
