Light of the Sword - Itaru Sakai

This work takes both its name and inspiration from a lighthouse "Sword Cape" that keeps watch near Japan's naval base. The piece describes how, come rain or shine, the lighthouse bids a safe journey to departing ships, guides them during their travels and eventually welcomes them home again. The music evokes many musical images - grand ships sailing by, white-capped waves, the deep blue of the ocean and the light of 'sword cape" as it silently guides ships over the mysterious waters.

Lights Out - Alex Shapiro

The renowned composer of Paper Cut and Tight Squeeze has created a love child from these two popular works. The result is Lights Out, an audience-wowing excursion into a new realm of opto-electro-acoustic wind band repertoire that incorporates visual and physical elements into an exhilarating piece. The music itself is stunning, but for the full effect you'll want to devise a performance that plunges the audience into darkness and suddenly surrounds them with glowing colors of LEDs and glowsticks. A very physical approach to connecting band music to life - and to light! To perform the piece, you'll need an audio system capable of playing the prerecorded audio tracks from a laptop computer via a small digital audio interface connected to an audio mixer. The race is on! Lightspeed is a high-velocity piece built almost entirely on fast-moving staccato eighth notes. Inspired by the painting technique of pointillism, which uses small distinct dots of color combining to form an image, the overall effect of Lightspeed is an energetic ride that is exciting and fun for the audience as well as the performers. Like a Mighty Stream - Johnnie Vinson

Composed in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the title of this dramatic setting is taken from a biblical passage and quoted by Dr. King in his celebrated I Have a Dream speech in 1963. After a fanfare-like introduction, the piece is comprised of three sections. The Dream relects on Dr. King's famous speech. This is followed by Strife, which recalls the violence of the civil rights movement, and finally Hope, which looks to a brighter future and is a setting of the hymn We Shall Overcome. Performed with or without the narration, this is a stirring work for young bands. Dur: 5:20
