Cantos - Donald Coakley

Another exciting composition by an exciting Canadian composer. Donald Coakley wrote Cantos in the 1970s and has now corrected previous errors in print and altered some sections. The title Cantos derives from that form of poetry in which a poem, in many cases epic in nature, consists of many short verses. The four movements are very short and contain interesting material for all players. Originally conceived as a piece for wind ensemble, this piece would work well in either a wind ensemble or concert band setting.

Cantus - Douglas E. Wagner

The starkness of a 12th-century plainsong begins CANTUS. The pace quickens as the textures thicken and become increasingly complex. The conclusion finds a meditative chorale with echoes of the opening, symbolic of the cyclical quality of our own lives! The composition is a highly evolved statement for the young ensemble and a vital new work in this genre. (3:09)

Canyon Creek Overture - Bruce Preuninger

This fantastic overture is a great way to start your concert or festival. The full-sounding beginning leads to a stately A theme, which is followed by a more delicate, sensitive B section. The return of the A theme with coda brings this fun piece to a rousing conclusion.

Canyon Riders - Frank McKinney

Think cowboys, horses, and the Wild West. There's a ton of musical fun here for percussion along with contrasting themes and melancholy solos for flute and alto saxophone. The low winds even get some action in this exciting composition for young bands.

Cape Breton March - John O'Reilly

Cape Breton is a wildly beautiful island on the northeast coast of North America. The Scottish settlers of Cape Breton brought a rich Celtic musical tradition with them. Fiddlers, drummers, pipers, and singers keep that music alive today throughout the island. "Cape Breton March" pays homage to that rich heritage with its sprightly syncopated rhythms and natural minor tonality. (2:00)

Capricorn Moon - Roland Barrett

Opening with furious trills in the woodwinds and fanfares in the brass, this aggressive, driving overture is based on the constellation Capricornus. The sensitive lyrical section provides wonderful music without overextending your group technically. The ending section begins softly but with the energy of the opening. As motives continue to develop and build, the piece suddenly encompasses the full ensemble, bringing the work to a dramatic conclusion!
