It was his sincere response to emotional impulse and the freedom with which he ranged over almost every field of musical creation which made him as great as he was. Frank Erickson passed away before he could provide rehearsal suggestions for this piece. This was one of his final numbers.

As its title suggests, "Farewell at Dawn" is a musical expression of bidding farewell to the night and beginning a new day. The piece opens softly with a gentle motive that evolves through simple, yet expressive material. A short quasi-canon provides a transition for a climax that resolves peacefully using the original musical motive. Ernesto Nazareth (1863-1934) may have been the most important Brazilian composer to ever live. Credited with blending European and Brazilian influences in his piano compositions, he created many new Brazilian sounds in both the popular and classical music realms. Light and bouncy, Favorito was originally written for piano, but has been excellently scored here by Daniel Maudonnet for concert band.

Fawkes the Phoenix (from ) - John Williams / arr. Michael Story and Robert W. Smith

The most memorable theme from John Williams' film score has now been scored for the youngest learners by a pair of veteran arrangers, Michael Story and Robert W. Smith. This energetic piece is a simulation of a horse race. All the emotions and thrill of a race can be felt in this work. This piece for very young band and optional choir was commissioned by Northern Dancer P.S., which was named after the famous Canadian racehorse. The snare and toms help to keep the horse moving forward while the winds perform the bold and stately theme. There is a moment of tension and suspense as the horse and rider can see they are not in the lead. But they triumph and the race is won!
