Celebration Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul

Celebration Overture was composed in the summer of 1976 and was given first prize judged by William Alwyn whose film scores Philip Lane has worked on for commercial recordings in the last 10 years. It is truly a celebratory piece with a dramatic pyramid opening, followed by the melodic introduction in solo clarinet, then solo trumpet, before accelerating to a rousing burst of celebration. A rich slower middle section leads into the return of celebration. This piece is included on several lists of recommended festival and contest literature. (Note: The harp part is non-essential, and may be omitted or played on electronic keyboard or piano.)

Constant Billy, Suite of Cotswold Folkdances (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul

The Suite of Cotswold Folkdances (not to be confused with Cotswold Dances) was commissioned by the Stroud Festival to celebrate HRH, the Princess Anne and her family taking up residence in the Cotswolds, near Stroud. The suite of dances is based on traditional Morris tunes prevalent in the Cotswolds at the turn of the century. Although the tunes themselves are left largely untouched, their implied harmonies and moods are treated more freely to create a balanced work for the concert hall. Numbers 2, 3, and 4 may recall more familiar variants since it is in the nature of folksong/dance for there to be more than one version when examples were transmitted, not always accurately, by word of mouth or note of pipe.

Shichi-Go-San (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sakai, Itaru

In Japan, a traditional festival called "Shichi-Go-San" (Seven-Five-Three) is held on November 15th every year to wish for the wholesome growth of girls aged seven, boys aged five and children aged three. The composer imagined how a seven-year-old sister with five and three-year-old brothers would go through various happenings, have fun visiting a shrine and strengthen their bonds. Reflecting the meaning of its title, Shichi-Go-San uses a lot of irregular time signatures to form a witty and resplendent concert piece.Duration: 7:00
