A characteristic of many Russian folksongs is the emotion that they contain - sometimes exceptionally fierce, sometimes, in contrast, resigned and melancholic. This makes the music captivating and gives it its special, distinctive atmosphere. The same can also be said for From Russia with Love, in which Roland Kernen has made use of three beautiful Russian love songs. In the cheerful and stirring Kalinka, the singer tells of a girl whom he fell head over heals in love with, so much so that she is always on his mind. "Answer Me, My Love" was originally written with German lyrics by Fred Rauch and music by Gerard Winkler under the title "Mutterlein". Shortly after, Carl Sigman wrote the English lyrics and gave it the title "Answer Me, My Love" which is now the most famous version. It became a hit in 1953, but it was during 1954 that Nat King Cole recorded it and made it a chart-topper in both the US and Europe. In 2000 the Canadian composer and singer Joni Mitchell included it on her successful record album "Both Sides Now". "The Graces of Love" (Le Gratie d'Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri, the famous dance master of the Milanese court in the Renaissance. It contains numerous dance tunes and precise descriptions of courtly dances. It also includes the tune 'Il bianco fior' (The White Flower) on which the first movement of Oliver Waespi's piece is based. A vigorous dance in three-four, it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement, calm and contemplative in character, features the tune 'Vaghe bellezze ...' (Veiled Beauty ...). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is varied anddeveloped. Finally, the third movement contains a Saltarello based on a tune by Vincenzo Galilei, the father of the famous astronomer, Galileo Galilei. It brings the work to a close with a hypnotic rhythm which is noble and virtuosic at the same time.

Love in the Garden - Modest Mussorgsky
The most important work by the Russian composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) is undoubtedly his masterly opera Boris Godunov. A number of years after the composer's death, this opera was re-orchestrated by Rimsky-Korsakov, with his romantic version being quiet different from the original score by Moussorgsky. 'Love in the Garden' is a lovely quiet moment from the opera, a beautiful duet between Marina and Dmitri. Add a little romance to any concert with this attractive arrangement for concert band.
