The piece was inspired by the weird and gruesome legend told about Robeson's Hills, just across the Wabash River from Vincennes, Indiana. In the midst of these hills is a deep, dark ravine, where the rays of the sun never penetrate. This place is known as Dark Hollow. (3:10)

The Haunter of the Dark is based on a tale by the author Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) about a deserted church, where according to an old legend a monster had been lying low for years.A scientist who studies ancient religions visits this church. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.
