The Winds Of Power - Nigel Hess
Unlike Nigel Hess's other works for wind band, The Winds of Power is not a programmatic work. After a dark and menacing opening a solo trumpet introduces a theme which will eventually become the centre of a piece and is soon heard tutti in a lyrical form. This is interrupted by a return to the opening mood, with only a brief respite in the form of a chorale for clarinet choir and harp. The theme tries to return once more in a rousing, somewhat cinematic version, but again the sense of foreboding overtakes it. An unsettling march-like section follows before the theme returns in its most lyrical and gentle guise, introduced by solos in the woodwind section. Eventually, a maestoso statement which erupts into a presto coda, ends the journey in a triumphant, more optimistic blaze of sound.

While I have written the piece in g minor, I have thrown in some diminished 7 chords and added some v chords for extraordinary sounds and novelty that students (and teachers who are tired of hearing I-iv-v-I over and over) are sure to latch on to and enjoy. The ranges on all of the instruments are well within the grade level of the piece, with Trumpet 1 going as high as 4th line D (just a couple of times), flute going no higher than their "C" and Trombone hitting their high E-flat one time. Distortion is a fun and unique composition written for young band and electric guitar, inspired by the author's grandson Owen, who plays trumpet and guitar. The piece features electric guitar with distortion, offering an exciting and fresh experience for both band and beginning guitarists. The guitar part, which primarily consists of power chords, includes a short solo that can either be improvised or played as written. A drum set part is included, but it's recommended to feature either the drum set or percussion, not both. This arrangement was made for The Suoni Wind Orchestra of Skien, Norway, and performed for the first time at their Promenade Concert "At Sea" at the Ibsen Culture Center, March 8th 2014, being the final number of the concert. Participating this concert was also the Choir Canto Libre and the two vocal soloists were Eli Kristin Hansveen and Andreas Hoff. Since that time this arrangement has been used also at other concerts involving choir and soloists. It is important that tempo is not too slow and one has to be thorough with details in the percussion parts. The Advent hymn we all know today as O Come, O Come, Immanuel was arranged in its modern form by Thomas Helmore and published in Hymnal Noted in 1856. Both the words and melody, however, predate this version by centuries.The tune, Veni Immanuel, is taken from a 15th century processional of French Franciscan nuns, part of the setting for the funeral hymn Libera Me. This arrangement aims to expand on the power and mystery of the original tune and will be most effective if the solo trumpet at the start and end of the piece can be placed away from the band, maybe at the back of the auditorium.
