Extreme Make-Over was inspired by a theme from the second movement of Tchaikovsky?s String Quartet No.1 (Andante Cantabile). It consists of a number of musical metamorphoses on the theme and includes several excerpts from Tchaikovsky?s Fourth and Sixth Symphonies and Romeo and Juliet. The most unconventional element of the work is instrumentation for ten tuned bottles to be played by members of the cornet section. This gives the piece an Indonesian Gamelan effect. In each of the four movements of this major work for concert band, the composer has tried to capture in music something of the spirit of this beautiful Swiss town of Rheinfelden, which lies on the banks of the Rhein. The opening movement, Promenade, sees woodwind and brass alternating short melodic fragments leading to a noble melody from the horns. The dreamy Ballad features a saxophone solo and chorale-like melody. This leads, via a four bar Interlude, to the Scherzo which takes the form of a moto perpetuo.

The sarabande originated in the early 17th century and is a stately dance in triple time. It was popular in France and Spain but as a dance it quickly spread throughout the courts of Europe and the style was soon adopted into instrumental music in dance suites for solo instruments as well as orchestra. Something of this style has influenced Simple Sarabande and although its harmonic language is perhaps more up-to-date it could be seen as a 'period piece'.

A Festive Tribute is an arrangement of a splendid chorus whichBach first used in the secular Cantata 207 of 1726, but is perhapsbetter known in its later version, which appears in Cantata 207a, thedescriptively titled Auf, schmetternde Tne der muntern Trompeten,which cannot be adequately translated but means something alongthe lines of 'let the trumpets sound'. While the lyrics are perhaps alittle obsequious, much of the music for this cantata is celebratoryand lushly scored for a large orchestra including trumpets, oboesd'amore and flutes, making it an ideal piece for a concert bandarrangement.
