Fiddle Tunes - James Curnow
Fiddle tunes have been an important part of American music since her earliest days. You'll enjoy James Curnow's new suite based on two fiddle tunes from the Revolutionary War period. The first movement uses the flowing melody Lovely Nancy, which is about a beautiful two-masted sailing ship. New London Pictures represents elements of London in the 21st Century. The Millennium Bridge describes the pedestrian's journey across this wonderful new landmark bridge over the Thames, starting at the imposing Tate Modern, crossing the busy river, and onwards to St. Paul's Cathedral with its bells ringing out over the great city. London Eye is an incredibly large ferris wheel situated on the South Bank of the River Thames. This movement depicts a "flight" on this riverside wheel, at the top of which the anoramic view of London is breath-taking and the exapnse of the music is a suitable depiction of the view. As with all modern cities, London is over-crowded with motor vehicles. London is the first major city in Europe to adopt a Congestion Charge, and this piece (with its stop and go traffic lights) is both racy and comical. Here are Londoners attempting to go about their business in the face of overwhelming odds.....

"The Glacier Express" is a famous Swiss excursion train that has traveled through the Swiss countryside between Zermatt and St. Moritz since 1930. Larry Neeck's composition is clearly descriptive of the train's journey and the spectacular scenery that passes throughout mountains, glaciers, lakes, tunnels and quaint Swiss villages. Lots of musical contrasts including a nice trumpet solo and interesting parts for every section! Ample percussion parts are sure to keep even a large "herd" of drummers both interested and involved. Johannes Brahms can be considered to be one of the top composers of the nineteenth century chamber music. He was a giant in this field and an eminent successor of Beethoven and Haydn. A masterpiece from his chamber music oeuvre is the trio in Eb opus 40 for piano, violin and natural French horn. In 1865, the year of his Horn trio, Brahms's mother Christiane died. It's well known that he fostered deep feelings for her. The slow part of the Horn trio with the tempo indication Adagio Mesto (sad) can be considered as a lamentation for his mother. The first performance of the piece took place in Zurich on 28th November 1865 and it was published a year later in November 1866. In this version for Wind Band Kevin Houben stays as true as possible to the original. The result is a deep and dark orchestration of the wonderful Adagio Mesto. A challenge for any orchestra and extremely suitable as concert piece. Duration: 6.00
