A Prairie Portrait - By Robert Sheldon

A Prairie Portrait was inspired by the poetry of Carl Sandburg. The lyrical quality of the music is a testament to the loving words he wrote as a tribute to his birthplace. The pioneer spirit shines through the opening of the work, full of youthful optimism and energy. The lyrical section that follows represents the poet's "hankering" for another day and beautiful night on the prairie, giving us the warm feelings of love and security we all feel about the place we call home. A Redmond Legacy - Music by Mark Williams

This clever new piece from Mark Williams has musical ideas that are inspired by some of Washington state's most famous legacies. A recurring rhythm uses long and short notes to spell out (in Morse code) the name of the first operating system created by Redmond's most famous computer software company. The main theme begins with a four-note pattern that brings to mind an advertisement by one of the hardware companies most closely associated with this operating system. The second, more songlike theme is a highly decorated version of the folk song "Billy Boy," a tongue-in-cheek way of honoring the area's most famous individual. At one point in the music, all three of these themes are played at the same time (the Morse code rhythm, the main theme, and "Billy Boy") to simultaneously honor all of the legacies in Redmond.

    A River Trilogy - By John O'Reilly

A River Trilogy provides a wonderful opportunity for first year bands to work on legato style. After an original introduction, the full ensemble plays the African-American spiritual "Deep River." A clarinet and flute duet ushers in the early English folk song "The Water is Wide," and the full band concludes with a lovely treatment of the American classic "Shenandoah."
