Blue Tango - Leroy Anderson

At the height of his career in the mid-1930s, Leroy Anderson began arranging for Arthur Fiedler's Boston Pops Orchestra. Later, Fiedler encouraged him to write his own tunes for the Pops. His compositions, more than 50 in number, virtually define the sound of the contemporary American pops orchestra. was a #1 hit in 1951, juxtaposing the charismatic melody over a traditional tango pulse. The work captured the spirit of an era. This new edition was originally arranged by the composer for concert band and has been freshly re-engraved with a full score for the first time, permitting a uniformity of articulation throughout the work. Blues Essay - Richard Maltby

Blues Essay is a display piece for solo trombone or horn and band. The rich melodic line is to be played in strict notation, but with a blues feeling. Good tone, control, and facility in the upper register are required of the soloist. The band parts complement the solo effectively and are not difficult. Blues for a Killed Kat - Jack End / arr. Frederick Fennell

Early one winter morning after playing at a Jazz club, composer and clarinetist Jack End observed a cat that had lain dead for a few days to be still in the dimly lit gutter in front of Sibley Music Library. Wen he dropped the instruments in his studio he sat at the piano to express his sadness - what else but with a Blues. His band played Blues for a Killed Kat for years and so did those who gathered for an Eastman School of Music class reunion in 1960 when Frederick Fennell asked him to score it for The Eastman Wind Ensemble. The Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra recorded it twenty-five years later in 1986 when Jack End died in his 67th year.
