Arrival at the Agora - David Marlatt

In ancient Greece an agora was a central meeting place to discuss affairs of state, where business was conducted and people could listen to philosophers. It later evolved into a marketplace where merchants and artisans would sell their wares. In modern times this has transformed into farmers markets and outdoor/street markets such as Portobello Road in London, England and the famous leather market in Florence, Italy. This piece by David Marlatt captures the various sights, sounds, and smells of a traveler wandering through an open air market in either ancient times or more modern.

Arrival Platform Humlet - Percy Aldridge Grainger / arr. Carl Simpson

Originally part of the 1916 orchestral suite IN A NUTSHELL, Grainger described the meaning of the work's title as, "Awaiting the arrival of a belated train bringing one's sweetheart from foreign parts: great fun! The sort of thing one hums to oneself as an accompaniment to one's tramping feet as one happily, excitedly, paces up and down the arrival platform." Written for a either solo viola or double reeds or a group of violas or group of double reeds, this arrangement for band was masterfully completed by Carl Simpson.

was inspired by the writings of Byron Reece and commissioned by the Northwinds Symphonic Band of Gainesville, Georgia (Ronald J. Evans, Conductor), and was premiered at the Georgia Music Educators All-State Conference in Savannah. The piece is a fantasy based on the hymn "King of Glory" by David Charles Walker.
