Dunkirk March - Mark Williams

This march commemorates a daring sea rescue during World War II in which over 300,000 French and British soldiers, surrounded by German forces, were evacuated from Dunkirk by a huge volunteer flotilla consisting of every imaginable type of boat-from tiny fishing boats to yachts. This work presents a unique opportunity for musical learning, as well as cross-curricular study in social studies/history.

Dynamo - Todd Stalter

"Dynamo" was written in celebration of the career of an administrator who was a staunch supporter of music, and known for being highly energetic and always "on the move." The piece mimics these characteristics by opening with a large release of energy, and the melodic modal Mixolydian motives that follow, bounce around the ensemble unexpectedly. (2:50)

Each Time You Tell Their Story - Samuel R. Hazo

Sam Hazo, composer of In Heaven's Air, offers this new beautiful work based on a poem written by his father, poet laureate of Pennsylvania. After a sensitive introduction, the poem is read under a haunting military cadence in the percussion. The material in the introduction is then developed and presented in a lush and beautiful setting. Chimes, wind chimes, and bells conclude the work which fades to silence. Very compelling.

This original concert/contest overture utilizes a variety of rhythms to produce an interesting and solid selection for young bands. Both the opening five-note motif and a secondary theme utilizing a dotted quarter, eighth rhythm are developed throughout the piece, providing all of the major thematic material. is an exciting treatment of the classic hymn, "How Firm a Foundation." The text for this hymn first appeared in 1787, and it was a favorite of American president Andrew Jackson. The tune used in this arrangement dates from 1839 and is the one included in the modern day hymnals of most denominations.

Early One Morning
