Dies Irae - Elliot Del Borgo

This symphonic poem is based on a chant attributed to Jacopone da Todi (c. 1230-1306) and describes the day of wrath and impending doom, while asking for mercy and salvation. The opening, treated like a Gregorian chant, soon moves into a whirlwind of energy as a large battery of percussion adds to the bold statements in the brass and flourishes in the upper woodwinds. A substantial work for your next concert program.

Dillon's Flight - Ralph Ford

"Dillon's Flight" was inspired by the legend of the Phoenix, a bird of fire that does not lay eggs, has no younglings, was here at the beginning of time, and yet still lives today in a hidden desert land. Every 500 years, the sun burns down on the Phoenix until a flash of light appears and it becomes consumed by the flames of fire. From the pile of silvery-gray ash rises up a young Phoenix. The young Phoenix then takes flight and sings its glorious song to the sun for another five hundred years. Dedicated to the Dillon School in Phoenix, New York, this musical depiction is jam-packed with energy. (5:07) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Discovery - Ryan Meeboer

Over time, there have been many great discoveries: inventions, energies, cyberspace, and new lands. This piece by Ryan Meeboer reflects the joys and excitement of making that discovery and enjoying its spoils. It opens using a variety of arpeggios in most of the instruments as a representation of the joyous announcement of the finding, as well as some melodic material introduced by the remaining instruments. Strong melodies and rhythmic drive make an ideal choice for either contest or concert use.

Diversions - Donald H. White

DIVERSIONS, for brass sextet, was written in memory of the composer's father - a man who had been particularly fond of music for brass instruments. Written in three movements, this work attempts to present to the listener a series of contrasting brass moods: a mood that is energetic and straightforward (I. Prologue), one of qiuet and thoughtful reminiscence (II. Reminiscence), and a mood of rhythmic light-heartedness (III. Rondel). Instrumentation: 2 trumpets in Bb, horn, 2 trombones, and tuba

Divertimento - Anna Amalia / arr. Lynne Latham

Anna Amalia of Prussia held various titles during her lifetime, including Princess and Abbess of Quedlinburg. Born in Berlin, she was one of ten surviving children of the royal family of King Frederick William I of Prussia. Princess Anna Amalia studied harpsichord, piano and counterpoint. Princess Anna also founded a music library collection, which included autographed scores of J.S. Bach and other composers. This collection still exists today (Amalien Bibliothek). This two-movement Divertimento in Bb Major has something for everyone. The melodic and secondary parts are passed equally between the instruments. The piano part is quite playable for a high school student. It has the character of a conversation between friends gathering for a friendly afternoon tea. This arrangement is scored for piano quartet, with a substitue clarinet part in place of violin.
