Czech Suite - Paul W. Whear

While much of composer Paul Whear's efforts have been in advanced-level music, he has also written some very significant works for lower level bands. In Czech Suite, Dr. Whear respectfully explores the simple and lovely folksongs of the Czech heritage. With exploratory solo passages (cued in other instruments, as well) throughout, beautiful melodies, and exciting ensemble sections, this suite is a delight to play and hear. Movements: 1. Czech's in the Mail Polka - Kevin Kaisershot

Czech's in the Mail Polka was written as a tribute to the German-Czech style polkas that the composer became so familiar with during his undergraduate years at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was a regular member of a local polka band and played the occasional "dance job" on numerous weekends. (2:30)

Da Vinci Sketches - Erik Morales

Drawing inspiration from the sketches of Leonardo da Vinci, Erik Morales offers this composition based on da Vinci's sketches relating to art, architecture, industry, and human flight. After an ethereal opening with a beautiful flute solo, the main theme is stated in its entirety. This theme builds through ever-changing textures as it climaxes in a massive percussion break before moving to the lyrical second theme, representing the Mona Lisa. The opening theme returns in a new setting as the piece comes to a stunning conclusion. Consider this one strongly!

Dakota Fanfare - Erik Morales

Explode into a flurry of sound with this riveting work based on a driving rhythmic pulse. Incredible trumpet flourishes open the work (and are surprisingly easy to play as they alternate strictly between first and open fingerings!) before the woodwinds take over to state the infectious main theme. After a whirlwind of meter changes and ensemble hits, the music returns to the opening material before a dramatic and intense accelerando, bringing the fanfare to a fiery conclusion. Stunning!
